Web Performance 2023

About this presentation

Front end performance used to be a relatively simple task–minifying, concatenating and gzipping, a bit of smushing of images, and all done. But in 2022 it's far more than that, and only becoming more complex. New patterns and technologies, like native lazy loading and resource pre-fetching have given front end developers greater control over performance, but these often come with subtle challenges that can hinder, not help performance. Core Web Vitals have changed the stakes–making performance a key quality signals for page rank. But CWV isn't a one-and-done–they continue to evolve, and new measures, like Interaction to Next Paint (INP) may supplement, or event supplant the first generation of Core Web Vitals measures. At Summit, Henri Helvetica, Head of Developer Community at WebPageTest will bring us up to speed with the core practices and vital technologies in front end performance today.
