Component architectures and design systems have brought our CSS and our JavaScript code even closer together, directly leading to the sudden rise of CSS-in-JS. It seemed like a necessary consequence of this was the need to introduce more runtime code to generate our styles, but Vanilla Extract shows us what CSS-in-JS can look like when combined with the time-tested ideas behind CSS preprocessors. In this talk we’ll examine the history behind Vanilla Extract, how TypeScript can let you write more maintainable CSS at scale, and how the world of CSS preprocessing still has plenty of room left for new ideas.
